"Birth of Typefaces" Exhibition Held at Mevic Osaka from Saturday, November 22 to Monday, November 24, 2014

Introducing "Osaka DTP Study Room"

The "Osaka DTP Study Room" is a community that aims to boost the entire industry by providing educational support and information sharing centered around graphic designers and DTP operators in the Kansai area.

We hold large-scale study sessions, exhibitions, and workshops that attract more than 100 people four times a year, as well as study sessions of 30 people every other week. Recently, we have invited various speakers regardless of genre, and it is popular enough to attract many creators regardless of the industry inside or outside the prefecture.

This time, while introducing the state of the "Birth of a font" exhibition that was held from Saturday, November 22 to Monday, November 24, 2014, Mr. Miyaji, the person in charge, thoughts on the typeface and " We talked about various things about "LETS".

I absolutely wanted to do the "Birth of a font" exhibition!

Chief WORKS STATION Emu Tomo Miyaji

Although it is a font that I usually use casually, I think that by deepening that knowledge, I can do more fulfilling design and DTP work, and I want everyone to "feel familiar" and "I want you to like it" So, I consulted with Fontworks about the reason why the exhibition was held.

After all, if it is Fontworks, "Chikushi typeface". I really wanted to do this "Birth of a Typeface" exhibition focusing on "Tsukushi typeface" for a long time. The "Osaka DTP Study Room," which we started around 2008 as a place to learn letters and typesetting, holds a biweekly study session, as well as an event where speakers are invited to talk once every few months. I will. This was because I was attending a study session that was originally in Nagoya, and I started thinking "I wish I could have fun in Osaka like this~".

This "Osaka DTP study room" is, of course, for those who deal with DTP at work, but also for beginners who are just interested in "Is it possible to make software by myself?" We have a wide range of people, including those who come. Therefore, in order to have more interest in fonts in addition to regular study sessions, I plan to co-sponsor a "Birth of a Typeface" exhibition that focuses on my favorite "Tsukushi typeface".

Not to mention the process of creating "Tsukushi Antique Mincho", which will be released as a new typeface, and an introduction to examples, of course, thanks to many people such as Juzo Oishi, Yusuke Kano, Masayuki Nagaku, and so on, the charm of Tsukushi typeface We were able to prepare an exhibit that could bring out the.

Also, this is a good place to co-host, but by posting examples of fonts that can not be seen normally, such as a font of a font and a font of another manufacturer, it is possible to make an impression that variations vary depending on how it is used. I'm afraid that It took me a while to realize it, but I'm glad we held it with this kind of content.

It's a "foresight" that made the introduction method an annual license.

"The Birth of a Typeface" Exhibition

Originally, Fontworks typefaces used "Rodin" and "Matisse" since the era of Packaging products, because they loved their designs. Since "LETS" was started, many typefaces can be used more efficiently than ever before, so I introduced it very soon.

In addition to fonts, the number of introductory formats that pay annual licenses has increased in recent years. Even now, I remember the fact that I was the first to do it, and I was happy to say, "Thank you!" It was expensive to buy a typeface at that time. Even though I have the typefaces I want, it doesn't mean that I have to arrange them in the family, and I think that it will be quite good… I was thinking about the balance with sales.

I like typefaces with strong design

I often make pages such as work patterns, catalogs, books, company newsletters, so when I bring in a typeface that has an impact on the title and a little Heading and adjust it to a layout that looks good, I am using "LETS".

Just as each client has his or her own requirements, there are also suitable fonts and layouts for each, so "LETS" with many options is easy to use.

For example, in order to attract readers with a small number of characters such as column titles, a typeface that feels rhythm is good. It has a strong design, and I think about the details. There are few other.

We want you to be able to use more "LETS"!

Typesetting Mr. Juso Oishi

However, there are still some things that I am not really satisfied with. You can export a page object to PDF now and upload it, but in reality, I rarely do that. Similarly, we will not outline the trafficking.

There are a number of pages, and I often make corrections as much as I can. Therefore, it is important to have the same font on the data producing side and the output side in order to reach the final form of printed matter, but this is a problem!

Layout Mr. Yusuke Kano

From the client's request for "how to look and layout like this", we are the ones who make the data, and we don't have to specify the font clearly, but "the font we want to use" is in our mind. We are preparing an environment where the font can be used. It's natural because it's my favorite font.

However, since there are no fonts, there are printing companies that can realize that idea and those that do not. To be more specific, I feel that there are many things that cannot be achieved in this area (Kansai area).

That's a problem. Long-awaited Text Even though a so beautiful if there is a font typeface, is really a shame that can not be used can not be specified.

The typeface is a commercial tool, and I am very particular about it because I am a human being from the age of phototypesetting.

Unlike now, it's a world where once you hit it, you can't easily redo it, so that's what makes it a habit to think about all the layouts.

Actually, I learned that there are people who are trying to make typefaces for the Text in Kyushu, so even before the first typeface (Tsukushi Mincho L/R) of "Tsukushi typeface" appeared, the letters were written. I pay attention every day to have an important role. I actively use the favorite “Chikushi typeface” wherever I can use it, but I hope that an even more open environment will be created.

This idea is often heard not only by me but also by my peers. “When I searched on the website, I was told that the font could not be used even though there is a notation that it can be submitted...”, “Why is the font that can be used differently if the department of the submission destination changes even though it is the same printing company?” It is often talked about on SNS.

We, as "LETS users", would like to make a loud voice and request the printing company to introduce it so that they can work with their favorite typefaces. So I want to spread the goodness of "LETS" to the production side. Of course, I would like Fontworks to promote the goodness of the typeface even more!!

< Editor's note >
Mr. Miyaji told me his thoughts at the Osaka dialect, "Fontworks typeface is beautiful and I like it ~". I realized that Fontworks was established thanks to people who like these typefaces. In order to respond to the wishes of those people, I would like to make efforts to make the Fontworks typeface "more usable" and "freely usable!"
