Fontworks partners with Japanese type foundry MoolongType to add six fonts to Fontworks LETS

press release

Fontworks Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Hisahiro Shimizu, hereinafter referred to as Fontworks) has partnered with MoolongType, a type foundry founded by Type Designers Ayumi Kiryu. We have begun offering six fonts, including ML Chocolate, in our annual flat-rate font service "Fontworks LETS" and "Fontworks LETS for Students."

This is the first time that MoolongType has provided a typeface to Fontworks.

What is MoolongType?

A type foundry founded in 2021 by Type Designers Ayumi Kiryu. After graduating from Nihon University College of Art, Kiryu worked at Kinuta Type Factory before founding MoolongType in 2021. Moolong Tokatsuki, released by MoolongType, won the Best Work award at the Japan Typography Yearbook 2023.

"ML Chocolate" is a kana font that looks like it was written with a chocolate pen.

This is a kana font that looks like it was written with a chocolate pen. It comes in three weights: Regular, SemiMelt, and Melt, and the letters get thicker as the chocolate melts.

The variable font ML Chocolate VF provided by Fontworks LETS allows you to seamlessly change the melting state and express movement. It also includes a distinctive symbol such as "Finger Heart" as an alternate (variant) of the heart symbol, which was created with Mr. Kiryu's desire to "add a little playfulness."

*Seamless weight change, a key feature of variable fonts, only works with App that support variable fonts.

[Comment from Mr. Kiryu]
This typeface was born when we were asked to create a font to be used in a Valentine's Day campaign and we proposed an animated variable font in which the letters melt.

Since the concept of variable fonts was announced at a typeface conference in 2016, they have been used in a variety of ways, including seamless weight switching, animation-like changes in Western fonts, and use in interactions. However, we felt that there were still few examples of Japanese fonts being used, so we developed ML Chocolate after working on a client project.

A color font version is also available. "ML Tokatsuki Kana"

This typeface features rounded, curved lines and sharp points, making it Recommended for logotypes and eye-catching Heading.

[Comment from Mr. Kiryu]
I wanted to create a typeface with a design that was completely unique in its letter shapes. I was inspired by the photos I take of interesting signs and lettering on signs while traveling or walking around town. I'd love for you to actually see it, but the "to" in Tokatsuki is shaped like the moon, so I named it Tokatsuki.

Fontworks LETS also offers a color font that can create a fun atmosphere. The three-dimensional expression of red and yellow creates a pop and fun atmosphere.

Color fonts are fonts that feature multiple colors and gradients, which sets them apart from regular fonts. They are excellent for on-screen use because they allow you to apply different colors and textures to each element without having to outline or image the characters. ML Tokatsuki Kana Color is an eye-catching, three-dimensional design that attractively combines two colors, making it ideal for eye-catching purposes that require visual impact.

*Can be used with design App that support color fonts. In software that does not Support "SVG artwork," a mechanism for displaying color fonts in color, the characters may be displayed in solid black.
