Times change, font love never changes

Blog

Nice to meet you and everyone you have met in the past, in Fontworks Magazine, nice to meet you! My name is Ando from the Sales Department.

It's been seven and a half years since I joined Fontworks in September 2011. As a salesperson, I had the opportunity to meet a lot of customers, but I have been asked a lot while interacting with customers.

"Why did Ando join Fontworks?"

Hmm, surely, even if you choose a font maker as a employment place, you may not come up with the idea easily. This is a good opportunity, so I would like to write here why I joined a company called Fontworks.

The university newspaper subscription made a difference in your life! ?

When I was a high school student, my homeroom teacher said during my home room.

"If you want to subscribe to the" The University of Tokyo Newspaper ", raise your hand ~"

For a long time, I was a kid who loved to read newspapers and magazines. Even at the high school dormitory where I lived at that time, I was still studying, listening to the radio in my room (the night before the mobile phone was popular!), And reading the newspapers and magazines. Since the subscription fee is 100 yen per issue, I raised my hand and said, "I think I was tricked and should buy it," and started to subscribe.

When I first received the newspaper, I was wondering, "Is it regularly issued by university faculty members?", But that recognition was betrayed in a good way. Students admired the book reviews of "Hundred Years of Solitude" (written by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez) and articles about college sports (college baseball and lacrosse). I still vividly remember how the happy feelings of the students were transmitted through the paper, and I fell into the feeling of being hit by a hammer with one of the few things in my life.

As a result of reading so many holes in each issue's newspaper, my goal was to make a student newspaper at university (laughs). This strong desire became the starting point, and after I entered university, I joined the newspaper circle and became completely immersed in the world.

I don't know that my love for newspapers will stay. The photo is "Rossiskaya Gazeta" (photographed by the author) purchased at a Russian book specialty store in Jimbocho, Tokyo.

When I first joined the club, I was full of interviews and writing articles, but I fell in love with the seniors who were using the editing software such as "EDICOLOR" and "InDesign" to edit the newspaper, and I was completely in love with digital. I became captivated by the font. If you say that it feels good when the appropriate font is filled in the article that I interviewed and finished with great care! From that time, I think that I was beginning to unconsciously feel the power of fonts.

After that, I steadily cultivated newspaper love and font love (Kojirase?), And arrived at Fontworks.

At the end of "I like"

I still think that I love newspapers and love fonts, for example, when I travel. My travel theme was "History, characters and football exploration" both in Japan and abroad, and I traveled to Germany and Serbia last year privately, but I asked a friend / acquaintance why he chose his destination. Be

"I want to see an umlaut on a signboard in the city"
"I want to buy a Cyrillic newspaper"

8 out of 10 people were honestly smiling (laughs)

Experience the history of the land, prepared as knowledge in advance, take a picture of a signboard in the city with a smartphone or iPad, buy local newspapers and magazines at kiosks and bookstores, and slowly and carefully watch at cafes and hotels. And enjoy the football at the end of the trip. That alone will give you sufficient satisfaction.

In Cologne, Germany. Even in front of the Cologne Cathedral, which is a symbol of the city, the font of the Roman German Museum (Römisch-Germanisches Museum) and ö (au umlaut) are worrisome, and I do not feel the affinity with my current work. I can't stay (photographed by the author)

In fact, I spent 300 euros (about 40,000 yen) in Germany, and 15,000 Serbian dinars (about 16,000 yen) in Serbia for newspapers and magazines. Even if it is the world wide, isn't it the only person who should bring a 30-cm ruler with me? I also wonder.

However, we had a great deal of accepting (and only) humans who confused such fetishes. Therefore, I am grateful to the company, but I am renewing my thoughts ahead of Reiwa that I would like to increase the number of our fans as a sales person.

Annual flat-rate font service "LETS", And established a system to meet a wide range in individual consultation, we not only Latin and multi Japanese Language also supports the fullness, in the spirit that will drive the industry will continue to progress even more powerful.

Please look forward to Fontworks in the Reiwa era!

PS
"Showa" will begin in Fontworks, Reiwa. It's not a story of time travel or parallel world (laughs) If you're interested, please come here!
