Font Blog "Lightweight font series that solves the problem of "heavy fonts""

Stories

This time, I would like to introduce the "lightweight font" developed for embedded devices.

As I just posted in the Announcement I added the weight of round Gothic lightweight font today.

Fontworks' lightweight fonts are ideal for IoT devices, where devices are becoming smaller and LCDs are becoming finer, and for use in wearable devices such as smart watches and low-spec ultra-small screen device devices that cannot allocate space to smart speaker fonts. Font.

This time, I would like to convey the importance of embedded fonts in the IoT era as well as "What are the advantages of Fontworks lightweight fonts?"

IoT devices are becoming more and more sophisticated, and development of beautiful fonts that are easy to read is an important issue!

Fontworks recognizes the importance of embedded fonts in the IoT era, and in particular, the market for ``automobiles and transportation equipment'' and the digital healthcare market, where the progress of IoT is expected due to the spread of connected cars, is expanding. High growth is forecasted for “medical care” and “industrial applications (factory, infrastructure, logistics)” where smart factories are expanding.

IoT devices are becoming more and more sophisticated, and development of beautiful fonts that are easy to read is an important issue!

Now let's talk about the characteristics of Fontworks Lightweight Font.

Developed based on Universal Design font with high "visibility" and "readability"

Based fonts, "visibility" high in "readability" Universal Design were evaluated for (universal design) of "UD Kakugo_Large adopted", stuck to the readability and beauty of the character design. Although the font capacity is low capacity, and has realized the base font and not inferior beauty.

Features of Fontworks Universal Design font

  1. 1 Designed with a larger dakuten/semi-dakuten
  2. 2 Wider alphanumeric "aki" and larger size
  3. 3 round Gothic has a larger character design
  4. 4 Demonstrated by joint research with Kyushu University

Two types of lightweight fonts to choose from "Do you need a font engine or not?"

There are two types of lightweight fonts from Fontworks.
The first is "Type-S," which reduces the font capacity to about 1/2 of the outline font that is the base.
Where "Type-S" is excellent, basically, lightweight fonts released by any font maker require a font engine for drawing, but "Type-S" is Since it is provided in TrueType format, there is no need for a font engine to display it.

Scalable and beautiful display is possible regardless of the drawing area of the device, and it is easy to unify the character design on multiple devices such as "wearable device" and "smartphone app" that works with it.
If the font capacity is lighter but acceptable to some extent, we recommend "Type-S"!

The second is the lightweight font "Type-XS," which is a lightweight font with a smaller capacity.
The font capacity has been reduced to approximately 1/4 of the basic outline font.
"Type-XS" is provided in a unique font format, so you need a font engine to display it, but if you want to emphasize lightness anyway, this is recommended!

You can choose "Type-S" or "Type-XS" depending on your environment!
